Changes in flood regime by use of the modified curve number method

This paper describes the use of a simple two stage rainfall-runoff model in which a curve number (CN) principle is used to calculate the soil water content and, subsequently, the rainfall contribution to direct runoff and groundwater flow. The maximum soil water retention, S, is used to express various characteristics of a catchment (infiltration rate, soil cover and land use, as in the CN method) relevant to flood formation. Using historical flood events, the model is calibrated, and the statistical distribution parameters of peak flows determined. With the same historical input data scenarios (rainfall), sets of flood hydrographs are simulated for various values of the parameter S, and corresponding distribution parameters of peak flows are determined. This procedure is used to demonstrate possible changes in flood regime to be expected due to changes of the catchment soil properties and its vegetation cover. A case study is presented for the River Hron catchment, area 582 km, in the mountainous region of central Slovakia. Changements du régime de crues par utilisation de la méthode modifiée "numéro de la courbe" (curve number). Résumé Dans cet article est présentée l'utilisation d'un modèle pluie-débit simple, ayant deux composants, dans lequel est utilisé le principe de la méthode "numéro de la courbe" (CN curve number) avec pour but d'estimer la quantité d'eau contenue dans le sol et ensuite la contribution de la pluie au débits superficiel et souterrain. Pour exprimer les différentes caractéristiques du bassin versant (taux d'infiltration, couverture végétale et mode de l'exploitation agricole de la surface, comme dans la méthode CN), qui ont une influence prépondérante sur la formation du débit, on utilise la rétention maximale du sol, S. L'étalonage du modèle et l'estimation des paramètres statistiques des débits maximums sont effectuées à l'aide des crues historiques. En utilisant les mêmes scénarios des données d'entrée (les précipitations) on peut faire la simulation des populations des hydrogrammes des débits de crue pour les différentes valeurs du paramètre S et on peut estimer les paramètres statistiques correspondants aux débits maximums.
